Easing the Toll on Teachers' Checkbooks

This article talked about the money that teachers spend out of their pockets for their classrooms. It estimated that they spend over a thousand on supplies. This estimation seems about right to me; it seemed that every year in high school that our supplies became less and less especially in my art classes. It was usually classes like art classes that were shorted but now it seems that it is spreading. My mother is a teacher and she is always going to the store for more supplies for her students and its always her own money she is spending. NCLB states that every student has the same opportunity to learn but with schools having less money every year this just is impossible without teachers spending their own money and they should not have to. Either the economy figures out a way to get more money to education or schools need to figure out where all their money is going and how to fix it. I also feel that companies should donate supplies. Stores like Office Max and Staples who get good consistent buisness should be able to give supplies to local schools. I understand that sometimes this does happen but usually because of an article like this one. That type of charity should not need to be an obligation because of the media, it should happen more often.

I agree with Jess. It is astounding to learn how much money teachers actually pay out of their pocket for the supplies in their classrooms. As we all know school supplies, though little, their expenses do add up to a costly amount. However, it is obvious to realize that children often learn better when they are most equipt with the newest supplies, or the most accessable untesils. As teachers it is important to focus on what grabs the students' attention, examples being, more hands on activites or arts and crafts. Students learn by doing and in order to get students more involved in their education it is important that they as well as the schools are provided with the most essential supplies and equipment.

I feel that it is very important the school districts and the federal government as a whole, start focussing on the children and their education. With that thought, providing education systems with more money and funding for educational supplies. It is obvious to see that in order to inforce NCLB, officals must act on the issue first at hand in the classroom, starting with simply school supplies. It is the teachers job to provide the students with knowledge, they should not be in charge of providing ALL the necessities to enhance a solid education, such as school supplies.

I agree with the statement that teachers spend a lot of money on school supplies and that most teachers spend money out of their own pockets on their students. I think that teachers should not have to spend their own money on school supplies, but should be given a certain amount of money every year to spend on their students.
