Probst

I agree with Probst talking about how talking can be hard work and how talking is a big part of the teaching process. Talking should deffinatly be encouraged during class to open students minds.

I definitely agree, sometimes it is hard work. Thinking about what you want to say, how you want to say it, etc. I also think there is a fear that no one will like what you have to say, or even care.

I was thinking about these two comments and also relfecting on the different ways that we should and do teach talking in a classroom. Probst mentions recitation versus academic discourse. Then he continues to discuss such things as debate, storytelling, etc. But I do not agree that all of the things he mentioned can not be utilized in a necessary way in the classroom. There should be room for debate on topics that do not have a "winning/losing" side to them.

More so, I would love to see "serious conversation" and academic discourse become something that is taught to people. I know that a lot of the people I engage in are hardly stimulating or challenging because there is lack of original or new thought. And as Bailey mentions, I think most of this stems from fear. I think there is not only a fear of being smart, but of engaging in educated or "academic" discussion. This needs to change.

I almost forgot, one of my favorite things that was spoken by Anne LaMott..."if you are a writer, try to find quotable friends". I think this is brilliant, and relates to the topic of talk.

Being able to have classroom discussions is definitely something that is important to encourage to students. Teachers should encourage students to speak in class because their opinions do matter whether they think what they are saying is right or wrong. By having open class discussions and showing students that there is no wrong answer or question could help them become more active in classroom discussions in general.
